LIL PEEP, ‘BENZ TRUCK (ГЕЛИК)’ | TRACK REVIEW

Lil Peep, "Benz Truck" Video ScreenshotLil Peep pushes the boundaries of rap, bringing a unique style to the table.  He showcases his one-of-kindness on hypnotic single, “Benz Truck.”

20-year old rapper-singer Lil Peep (born Gustav Åhr) is quite an interesting guy. He’s interesting in regards to his background, personality, and his abundance of body ink. He drops a new EP/mini-album, entitled Come over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1 on August 11, 2017.  This represents his first project of note.  Ahead of Come over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1, Peep released two singles: “Benz Truck” and “The Brightside.”  For our purposes here, we’ll focus on the Benz Truck.
Lil Peep, "Benz Truck" Video Screenshot“Benz Truck” is certainly different – it stands out from the crowd.  From the start, the sound is dark and foreboding.  While there have been darker rap tracks than this one, a sense of mysteriousness amplifies the darkness.  Also elevating the unsettling nature of “Benz Truck” is Lil Peep, who comes off very odd and unique, for a lack of a better description. His personality is embedded here for sure.  His ‘one of a kind’ status matches his bio and the articles penned about him.
Lil Peep, "Benz Truck" Video ScreenshotThe next question is, is “Benz Truck” good, bad, or somewhere in between.  Likely, it depends on your taste in rap or perhaps, music in general.  Over the years, rap has expanded tremendously beyond the traditional, and Lil Peep isn’t traditional in the least. Clearly sad, he raps and sings in an undertone that occurs throughout the course of the song.  At first, particularly for a first-time Lil Peep listener, it’s off-putting.  Even so, there’s something hypnotic about the delivery.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Lil Peep, "Benz Truck" Video Screenshot“Benz Truck” has its fair share of pros.  The hook, alongside the delivery, is hypnotic and catchy:
“Lil Bo Peep with a brand-new b*tch / In the back of the club with the GothBoiClique / Iced out teeth on an iced-out whip / With the limousine tints, you can suck my dick…”
The verse isn’t particularly deep, but again, the vibe is alluring for whatever reason.  Listening to Lil Peep, there is something compelling, even if it’s hard to pinpoint what it is.  Worth checking out.
